Testing your horse with Etalon fuels our ongoing exploration into equine health down to the DNA. From unraveling genetic mysteries linked to health and color to understanding horse performance, you can learn more about our research initiatives and how you can help shape the future of equine genetic testing today!
Every time a horse person, just like you, tests with Etalon, the horse’s DNA sample is added to our secure biobank for future research. And even if you haven’t tested with Etalon before, we are often looking for samples from horses for specific studies to further our understanding of certain conditions. These samples are crucial for our scientists who study the genetic factors behind horse health, disease, coat colors, performance, and more. Our biobank isn’t just for DNA samples, it also collects other information, like vet records and details about how horses are cared for. Our research team analyzes this data to find links between equine genetics and physical attributes, and how they affect a horse’s health.
However, our opportunities to research and more deeply understand our equine companions are limited by three important factors: money, samples, and time.
Financial Investment Research requires resources such as radiographs, veterinary documentation, specialized equipment, materials, and skilled personnel - all of which cost money on your end and ours!
Samples Your DNA samples give us the opportunity to increase our reference population, allowing for more studies and more accurate information for all horses.
Time Data analysis and interpretation are necessary steps in publishing valid scientific findings. Solid scientific research follows the six official steps of the Scientific Method. Once those steps are completed (which takes time!), studies undergo peer review by the scientific community to ensure the findings are valid. The peer review process can be quick or take years for more complex studies.
We are actively collecting DNA samples to research several possible genetic-based health conditions and traits, as well as ancestry, but we can’t do it without the help of the horse community.
Horses accepted into our studies will be asked to submit the following information:
If your horse has been DNA tested for color yet displays white markings not associated with known genes, they would be a great candidate for our research.
Additional Requirements:
The genetic cause of rabicano coloring, which can present as a small number of white hairs at the tail base and range to a roan-like appearance, is currently unknown. If your horse is a rabicano, we would love to include them in our research and solve this genetic mystery.
Additional Requirements:
Equine Complex Vertebral Malformation (ECVM) refers to a group of malformations that affect the normal development of C6 and sometimes C7, as well as the first and second sternal ribs. We hope to discover the genetic component of ECVM through this study as these malformations are believed to be inherited.
Additional Requirements:
Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis (DSLD) is a debilitating connective tissue disorder that is believed to have a genetic component associated with its development. If you have a horse with DSLD, they would be a great candidate for our future research.
Additional Requirements: Veterinarian diagnosis and diagnostic results and/or clear presentation of DSLD are required for participation
This study aims to deepen our genetic understanding of Kissing Spines in horses.
Additional Requirements:
If you have a horse you suspect has a health complication due to white marking variants, including horses that were born and have been determined to have traits making them incompatible with life, they would be a great candidate for our research.
Additional Requirements:
If you have a horse with a veterinarian-diagnosed health condition that may have a genetic component, your horse could be helpful in our research efforts.
